Beauty Beware

As her beauty grew
so did his dangerous love
he watched her in want
as she walked gracefully above

On one sunny day
she made a costly mistake
lured by a flower
she could not forsake

She strayed from her companions
ocean nymphs left her side
as she hunted the narcissus
that opened her heart wide

As she reached for the jonquil
the Earth separated
a golden chariot came out
and her destiny was fated

Hades dragged the fair lady
to his Underworld
leaving Demeter in distress
at the disappearance of her pearl

She searched both day and night
for her treasured daughter
while her crops did suffer dually
by both loss and tearful water

The Sun did have enough
of watching the sad sorrow
told Demeter what happened
who spoke to Zeus that morrow

Hades must release her child
or the Earth would cease to bloom
but Zeus’s brother was the wiser
and saved his desire from doom

He bade Persephone eat
six pomegranate seeds
securing her to the Underworld
with his treacherous deed

The proposal was agreed upon
for six months she would be his
and Demeter’s crops would cry
mourning the lack of happiness

Until the time had passed
for Persephone to see the Sun
and light up the precious Earth
bringing spring to everyone

This is the most poetic telling of the myth of the four seasons that I’ve come across. As a boy, I was big-time into Greek and Roman mythology, though often confused by the different names for the same deities, and your telling brought back those memories.
