TOMORROW’S YESTERDAY

Janie writes her poetry
For people on the beach
Compromises on the verse
But still she tries to preach

Melody with just three cords
Repetition in 4/4 time
Simple muse for quiet souls
Trying so damn hard to rhyme

Time now passed has mellowed
No one here calls in
A life imbued with scares of war
and echoes of her sins

The seasons have taken its toll on her
From a flop house in the village
Then a top floor endowed with opulence
To the victors goes the silage

Janie use to dress in flowers
Sing the songs of Jessie Colin Young
Timothy Leary was her family doctor
“Stop the War” was her favorite song

Time is gone and issues faded
Now wonder if her youth was bought
For abstract thinking beyond the pale
With a comfort route, she sought

Now she downs her dinner drink
While her companion checks the holdings
Idle talk to ease the strain
Restive irons are smoldering

“Did she compromise too much?”
She asks herself too many times
For excitement and hard conviction
She pours herself another wine

Had Mary Hopkin singing in my head as I read this, and I loved the final paragraph where Janie accepts her lot and sips another wine.
