We forget that all living things are sacred. We are so busy in our little world that we don’t consider the perspective of others. Case in point- immigration is the heart of our democracy. We used to welcome migration to this great country. Even the Statue of Liberty welcomes all who enter. So here we sit, gathered together in our own huddled masses, the latest wave of immigrants.
We try to be invisible. We just want to be ignored. Half of you do, in fact, see us as a mild irritant largely to be ignored and likely to go away in the future. The other half bully and condemn us. We are banned from bars and restaurants. Protestors march against us. Isn’t this the land of freedom where you can go where you want and do what you want?
Well, I suppose you think you are about to have your way and kick us out. Your insistence that we “Go home, go back to where you came from!”- is a hard command to fulfill. We have no home. Nobody will have us.
Now comes the last straw. You have designed several ways to destroy us. With the advent of at least five different vaccines you will be rid of us at last. No more Covid 19! I doubt that you will see the arrogance and futility of your thinking. Yes, you can temporarily kill some of us, but in fact, we already have cousins in Denmark. Three hundred of your own people have gotten the new mutated strain of Covid 19 from minks raised in your mink farms in your efforts to have fine coats and jackets.
So, what have you learned? Have you learned to think about the fragile balance between humans and all other animals? Have you learned about the dangers of living in the animal world? Have you considered the cost of eating bats? Have you considered the cost of global warming which breeds all kinds of new and dangerous bacteria and viruses? No, you just kill all the minks in the farm. What will you do when you face infections from cute animals like panda bears, beagles and kittens? Sure, blame the viruses of the world. Don’t look at your own behavior.
OK, I’ll be signing off for now. You won’t have Covid 19 to kick around anymore. But, don’t throw away your masks and gloves. Mother nature has a plan.
Perfect futility is the best way to describe the human mind. Your piece defines it quite effectively.

The last sentence says it all, there is always a “plan.” The only question, is it ours or natures?

You are quite expressive here! And I have just finished reading about a mink (and human) outbreak in Oregon, so it may be a bigger problem that we thought. I keep wondering about the meaning of progress and if we have made any…?? Thanks for stirring up lots of thoughts about the meaning of life!!
