BURY THE DEAD, TREAT THE SICK AND RIDE TO THE SOUND OF THE CANNONS

Blame these dirges insensitive, the roar see not beyond
Tears of sorrow consolers, cashing in a life coupon
The cards were dealt, the game was on, last hand seal the fate
Called the bet laid down the cards, two black aces and black eights

Grantor of expectations, the invisible hand decides
With a gain-of-function benefit, who will smile or cry
One thing or the other that puts us in the ground
Give respect, bury the dead and move beyond the mound

Treat the sick and move them quick, from those that unwittingly gave
The holes been dug, the dirt’s been spread, hallow is the grave
It’s time for us to appeal what needs to timely heal
The people’s convalescent days is what we all should feel

Hospital gowns, and ventilators, beds and body count
Replaced by discharge orders, the family’s paramount
Follow up is frequent, the toll to be decided
Best of all, those not fall, will share the life beside us

When it’s time negate happy talk, look back at what has happened
Doctor calls and midnight falls, replaced by gumshoe captains
The job’s to face what laid to waste, prosperity that was made
Was it accidental in a Chinese kennel, that tossed the cursed grenade

Or are we to believe what we just seen, bats and a bowl of soup
A dinner planned, beyond Wuhan, cause a calamitous counter coup
The market wet with all its pets, kill more than Oppenheimer
Or is it so as the theory grows, another chance to harm her

Let me say, another way, how to tackle our success
Unleash a foe, a hammers blow, put our commerce in duress
Has what we seen, tough to glean, way beyond the pale
An act of war from a Chinese whore, setting off a global gale
“Ride to the sound of the cannons”

I’m curious about the thought process for your works…do you think in rhymes or do you have topics/thoughts and then translate those into poetic form?

Something hits me like a rock and the idea stick in my head for a long time, sometimes even years. I walk around mumbling to myself kicking the idea around 🙂 I then sit down and write some ideas, usually a “steam of consciousness” and may sit on it for years pull it out of guitar case and finish it. Three things happen with the idea. First I try and focus on what I want to say. I’ve always had a tendency to overwrite lyrics, leaning more toward Bob Dylan than Tom Petty. That’s where the second things happens. I try to get the rhythm into the pierce, whether a song or prose and the lengthly writing most times are condensed. . And three, does it make sense since I really like writing in metaphors. If three people hear the song or read the poem do three people have different interpretation of the piece. that’s a success for me ala Hotel California or some early Steely Dan work. Now it sounds very clinical but most times it just happens, case in point THE WALK. I couldn’t write it down quick enough and with five minutes I had the complete song.
Thanks for your interest in how I do it.
