In the Israel/Arab Six Day War in June 1967,
An American signal ship, USS Liberty was attacked
by Israeli Mirage Jets and gunboats. After Years
of investigation, the attack was deemed an accident
in the "fog of war"... This piece is not intended to
reflect or determine guilt but only to accurately tell
the story.
Strange voices echo disaster
What in the world were they after
Thirty-four bodies were buried alive
As the jets made their strike from the sky
War once again had arrived,
The General had chosen his side
There was not a doubt, this would be all out
with a plan of attack to destroy
Politics showed all its cards,
decision to make would be hard
The U.S. will spy, on a proven ally
in the hope of achieving new friends
Israelis warned of the plot,
A lot of their boys would be lost
They couldn’t afford, to dull the quick sword
by doing away with surprise
The President called all his aids
a general consensus he gave
Americans are safe, from an Israeli strafe
we’ll continue to monitor their plans
Strange voices echo disaster
What is the world were they after?
Thirty-four bodies were buried alive
As the jets made their strike from the sky
The ship’s hull read GTR
wasn’t ordered to travel that far
Communications were slow, the Captain didn’t know
he was moving into a rage
Israeli Command Center reported,
there’s an enemy ship unsupported
An Egyptian boat, off the Israeli coast
El Quseir is the ship to be silenced
The combatants again tried in vain,
to persuade their long-trusted friend
No order could be gave, sending Jews to the grave
with a ship broadcasting the moves
The response was a previous one,
U.S. will not silence your gun
But Egypt will choose, our friendship to lose
if we don’t assist with their war
The maneuvering about to commence,
in response to their own self defense
Will finalize the plan, when Moshe Dayan
gives the word to silence the ship
Pilots were all suited up,
the order was given in rough
Liberty was dead, the memorandum read
This strike would save more lives
Take down that small post flag,
run-up the garrison rag
The bridge ensign cried, no confusion would arise
as to who this ship did belong
Came racing out of the sky,
Mirages on one passing ride
Identified the boat, from the colors afloat
Still proceeded to make a death run
When the planes finished their job,
two more arrived and lobed
Napalm at the boat, still remaining afloat
superstructure now was on fire
Ensign registered surprise,
he thought they were on our side
Then he realized, as men around him died
they we to be sacrificed
Strange voices echo disaster
What is the world were they after?
Thirty-four bodies were buried alive
As the jets made their strike from the sky

I remember vaguely hearing about this disaster. I can imagine the debates about it. I agree with Burt, war is truly hell!! I am as always grateful to the valiant warriors that look out for America.

War is hell, no matter whose side we may be on! I’ve always scorned the term ‘friendly fire’, which this wasn’t but could have been, because the results are the same, regardless of who fired.
Nicely done!

I had only vague memories about this time period and event, but you inspired me to do some research to flesh out my knowledge about it. The poetic form contrasts to the ‘heavy’ message!
