PIECE OF CLOTH

Stitch the edges, sew the twine
Put the stars in perfect line
The blue and red, this piece of cloth
Symbol of a rebel cause

Young in spirts, at Baltimore
Have not yet what the fighting’s for
The strips and stars on early dawn
Arouse Scott Key to pen the song

Years have passed the pallet grew
A fight in the pacific anew
Six Marines on Iwo raised
A piece of cloth on that deadly day

Something happen while we slept
In our dreams the monster crept
Exploded building dust filled sky
Than we raised the flag twice the size

Lift the vail make a toast
Father son holy ghost
Passing colors, gun salute
Fold the flag, give to the spouse
This timeless rag, This piece of cloth
Thank you dearly, Betsy Ross

Great description of how a ‘timeless rag’ can hold so much meaning!

Although Canadian, I’ve always admired your flag and the strife from which it arose. Nicely done!
