The Bike

I’m sorry, he mouthed and drove away,

leaving me down, luckily surviving!

He hadn’t the courage or character to stay

Face the fact he was texting while driving.

I’d been in a bike lane, clearly marked,

Pedaling along at a leisurely pace,

Early afternoon, not close to dark

No reason to be here, grass in my face!

Cuts and scrapes, broken bike, but no bone

The EMT says that I’m “good to go”!

Police said “at least some one phoned”

Otherwise, there’d be no way to know,

I’m so happy to survive!

Hope he’ll stop texting and drive!

  1. I’m glad your character survived with no lasting damage. My biggest pet peeve is people who text or are otherwise distracted while they drive. This brings it home even more because my husband bikes three times a week!

The gentle end makes it a nice ride!

You paint a poetic scenario that plays out all over the joint. I am fortunately old enough to remember a time when the car was your escape from it all and not an extension!
