Snow

I awoke just after daylight creeped into view.  My wife shrieked as I emerged from

the bedroom; Snow, look at it its snowing, can you believe it?  It’s October, only.

We are still “up north”, not yet set to go to Florida for the Winter which was the norm

for the past 14 years.  Why is that?  Her hip was just replaced with titanium. and ceramic.  We can’t leave for 4 weeks.  Doctor has to check her out, first.

But, snow.  I said that’s great, and began remembering:

Remember the fun we had pulling the kids in that yellow sleigh?  It was red, she shot back.

Remember the snowman?  Snowmen, I corrected myself.  Many snowmen over the years.  One snowwoman too, but spray painting your old bra red didn’t get the plaudits I had sought.

Remember the snowball “fights”?  Those big fluffy ones that teased and tormented the little ones as they screamed with delight?

Remember the shoveling?  On Easter Sunday once.  Just to get the kids to church alive and back home again?

Remember too, the storm of ’78?  Bogged down for a week with the fireplace in full flame everyday, just to get the chill out?  Ah!  What a deal that was.  Drifts all the way up to the roof.

Remember the hill behind the house.  Jeff, Heidi, and little Megan sliding down with the sleigh, the red one, and the blue faux inner tube?  We had to call them all in for hot, no warm, cocoa and popcorn.

Remember too, the ice storm, not really a storm, but just beautiful ice on all the trees, drooping trees, and then the Sun sparkling like it electrified the whole stand of trees?

We even made those angels in the fresh snow.  All five of them spread out like they were near the gates of heaven.  Remember?

Ah! Yes! The skating on the frozen pond in the next neighborhood.  I did my little hockey moves and promptly fell on my you know what. Remember?

Awful snow?  Not really. The trees are golden.  The sun peeks out.  The broad expanse is broader now then ever behind our house.

In the fleeting snow!

I enjoyed hearing your memories. That last line about fleeting snow is also about life! Your humorous memories were my favorites–the snow woman and your hockey moves!

  2. Such sweet family memories. It’s good to write them down before they are forgotten.

All my memories of snow and ice were bad. Your words almost made me nostalgic for northern winters. Well-done!
