PROFOUND EVENT”S”

“Events”, because every movie I ever saw as a kid was a profound event. No matter what the topic, I acted out the film until I saw another that took me away.

Cowboy films: I rode the pillows on my bed and “shot”  anyone who entered my room with imaginary guns and bullets. Hopalong Cassidy shared my bed and my “horse”.

Fantasy films: “Ali Baba & the Forty Thieves” & “The Moonstone” took me away to far places, allowing my imagination to run amok.

Historic epics: Films that taught me more than school-learning, I still think. Learning while being entertained – perfect!

Musicals: Probably the happiest influences. To this day, I still remember dancing with Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire with long lines of Busby Berkeley chorus girls. Wow!

War films: Movies that thrilled me the most, making me proud of our military and the action depicted.

Comedies: Prehaps the most profound influences. I can still remember lines from the Marx Brothers and Laurel & Hardy!

My bedroom became an escapist reality where I could shoot the villains, dance with Cyd Charise, score the winning run in the world series, climb Mt. Everest or do things I’d never be able to do in real life. I could reenact these scenes in my mind over & over – and still do!

Movies still fascinate me to this day. At the same time, they influenced and instructed me. Who could ever forget John Wayne or Katherine Hepburn or Cary Grant or Greta Garbo and so many, many more?

“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn”

  1. Movies – the great escapism of our youth, and now old(er) age. I never liked to both read the book and see the movie, preferring one or the other. If I read the book first, the movie never measured up. If I saw the movie first, the book lacked a certain brilliance of color and sound.
